Kursad Kahramanoglu, Secretary General of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA), affectionately known as the "Pink Pope" in human rights circles, said yesterday (August 1, 2003) in Manila, The Philippines, where he is inspecting the preparations for the 22nd ILGA World Confernce:
"This Vatican document against same sex marriages may seem like an attack on lgbt people - but it is not. It is an admission of failure."
"After years of attacks on us, the present conservative Pope is now asking democratically elected politicians to do for him what he himself failed to achieve: to stop the tide of history and discriminate against same sex couples. Some Catholics believe that the Pope is infallible, but nobody believes he is forever."
"Conservative popes come and go, but the tide of history is unstoppable. It is only a matter of time before this discrimination against the families formed by same sex couples will be removed everywhere. When people look at this document years from now, they will be very amused - in the way we are now amused with the debate of 'How many angels can you fit on the head of a pin?'"
